The Savona court has condemned
the mayor of Pontinvrea Matteo Camiciottoli, from the League
party, to pay 20,000 euros in damages to former House Speaker
Laura Boldrini in relation to statements he made allegedly
insinuating that she should be raped.
The mayor said Boldrini should be raped "to put a smile back
on her face".
Some 100 euros will also have to be paid to the women's
rights associations that sued him: Unione Donne Italiane,
Differenza Donna, Se non Ora Quando, Donne in Rete and Centro
per non Subire Violenza.
He will also have to pay court expenses.
Prosecutor Chiara Venturi had requested a sentence of 8
months in jail.
The mayor has said he will appeal the sentence.
