President Sergio Mattarella said
Tuesday that all migrants who want to live in Italy must have a
good command of the Italian language.
"Language is the first tool on the road to integration for
those who have recently arrived in Italy," Mattarella told the
States general of the Italian language conference.
"The role performed by local authorities, by many civil
society association and by all the private and public
institutions involved in teaching Italian, is important and
precious".
The head of State also called for support for
Italian-language media outside the country.
"Some instruments have been experimented with success in
recent years," Mattarella said.
"I'm thinking of Italian-language press and publishing
aboard, for which public support is indispensable, I'm thinking
of translations, of the production of audio-video content, where
the Comunità Radiotelevisiva Italofona (CRI) can play useful
role".
