The opposition centre-left
Democratic Party is so dysfunctional it should be led by a
psychiatrist, party heavyweight and former industry minister
Carlo Calenda said Tuesday.
"The PD is becoming a place in which the only secretary that
should stand is the president of the association of psychiatry",
he told Italian radio.
The party is at such a low ebb that it would be better for it
not to run in next spring's European Parliament elections, he
added.
PD leader Maurizio Martina, who recently rejected chair
Matteo Orfini's call for the party to be dissolved and refounded
from the ground up, reacted by calling for "more unity and less
arrogance".
He said "we are the only bulwark against this Right.
"We must change, but certainly not extinguish ourselves".
