European Commission
Vice-President Jyrki Katainen on Tuesday expressed
disappointment at Italy's lack of alleged progress in improving
its public finances.
"The EC's opinion on Italy's budget law will come out next
week and I don't want to anticipate it," Katainen said.
"But the fact is everyone can see from the numbers that the
economic situation in Italy is not improving.
"The only thing that I can say in my own name is that all the
Italian people should know what the real economic situation of
Italy is - a deviation from the medium-term objectives in the
structural balance," Katainen said.
The European Commission will send an new letter to Italy
requesting clarification and commitments in relation to the
budget law and it will make a definitive decision about the
package in May 2018, ANSA sources said Tuesday.
On Tuesday the college of commissioners spoke about the EC's
opinion on the Italian budget law, which is set to be published
on November 22.
