President Sergio Mattarella has
scrapped a visit to Bologna University on December 12 after
scrubbing appointments in Milan today to follow the government
crisis, sources at the presidential office said Wednesday.
Mattarella is set to accept Premier Matteo Renzi's resignation,
expected on Friday, before starting talks with political parties
about the best way out of the crisis sparked by the government's
stunning defeat in a Constitutional reform referendum Sunday. He
may appoint another member of Renzi's Democratic Party, or a
technocrat, and may ask the new premier either to steer Italy
towards new elections after framing a new electoral law early
next year or to try to serve out the government term until 2018
with a specific reform agenda.
