The consequences of the
Italian government crisis are not worse for the EU's future than
Brexit, European Commission spokesperson Margaritis Schinas said
Tuesday.
"No. We don't think so," he said in replying to a question.
Matteo Renzi has said he will quit as premier after his
government's Constitutional reform was rejected by almost 60% of
voters in a referendum on Sunday.
President Sergio Mattarella has asked Renzi to hold off on
quitting until the 2017 budget bill is approved by the Senate in
order to ward off the risk of parliament being forced to apply a
provisional budget.
Mattarella will then decide what to do.
Asking someone to form a caretaker government is an option.
The anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S) and the
rightwing Northern League have called for new elections to be
held as soon as possible.
