European Economic Affairs
Commissioner Pierre Moscovici said Wednesday the EC's budget
letters to member countries including Italy "should not be
dramatized", calling them an "instrument of dialogue with
governments".
He said "our philosophy is not the stick", adding that "we
are often criticised for this but I assume responsibilities".
Moscovici said he would see Economy Minister Pier Carlo
Padoan on the sidelines of a conference in Bratislava Friday and
would be able to talk about Italy's 2017 draft budget and the
European Commission's doubts about parts of it.
Moscovici said the main problem with the budget bill was
the discrepancy in the structural deficit compared to what had
been agreed. "Let's hope we get specific answers tomorrow," he
said.
