Premier Matteo Renzi on
Wednesday blasted the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement and
Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia (FI) for suggesting his
government had undermined democracy.
"I've heard the M5S talk of a mark-2 dictatorship. (FI
House whip Renato) Brunetta said that democracy is being turned
to pork," Renzi told the Lower House.
"But words are important and being as someone put an end
to democracy in this chamber 90 years ago, I say you can think
what you want about the referendum, but this is democracy and
throwing it into doubt is an insult to Italy".
Renzi also hit back at the M5S for saying his Democratic
Party (PD) was implicated in the Capital Mafia case regarding an
alleged criminal gang that muscled in on city contracts worth
millions.
"Before talking about Capital Mafia and trash, look at who
the refuse business went to in recent years, look at who got the
consultancies for trash in recent years and have some respect
for the PD," Renzi told the Lower House.
"The government wants to work for Rome and combat all
forms of illegality".
New M5S Rome Mayor Virginia Raggi's environment chief
Paola Muraro is under investigation over her past role as a
consultant for the capital's trash company AMA.
