Italian Premier Matteo
Renzi paid tribute to former Israeli president Shimon Peres on
Friday after attending his funeral in Jerusalem. Renzi said
Peres had performed a "final service" by bringing together US
President Barack Obama, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas at the funeral.
"It's a great political accomplishment and an opportunity
to give a signal to this tormented land," he said.
"It has been an important day".
Renzi told Italian media that he gave the Peres family the
condolences of Italian President Sergio Mattarella and a
personal message from former president Giorgio Napolitano, "who
worked a great deal with the Israeli statesman".
