The Rome council assembly
started an extraordinary meeting on Thursday to discuss a motion
ratify Mayor Virginia Raggi's decision to withdraw the city's
support for the capital's bid to host the 2024 Olympics.
The motion is expected to be approved easily as Raggi's
anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S) has a big majority in
the assembly.
The meeting started with by M5S councillor Marcello De
Vito in the chair but Raggi is scheduled to take part later.
Diana Bianchedi, general coordinator of the bid
committee, was present too after calling on all city councillors
to look at the bid "on its merits".
