Minister Stefania Giannini said Wednesday she will make sure
students in the earthquake-stricken town of Acquasanta Terme get
new computers as soon as possible after theirs were stolen in
what she said was an act of "shameful looting".
Thieves stole computers overnight from a middle school
opened September 14 as the first tangible sign of the rebirth of
the Marche village after a devastating August 24 earthquake in
central Italy, Mayor Sante Stangoni said earlier in the day.
"I am indignant at this act of despicable looting," he
said. "We're struggling not to let the village die, we're doing
everything every day, then you have people in Italy like this,
who have no shame...".
The earthquake flattened villages in Lazio and Marche and
killed 298 people. The quake left thousands homeless and caused
billions in damage, including in the adjoining regions of Umbria
and Abruzzo.
"I activated the ministry task force in charge of the quake
zone so that the kids will get new computers as soon as
possible, thanks to the donations we've been getting," Giannini
said.
"Many have already offered to help - we will make the most
of this generosity, so that we can restore what has been taken
away from the students of Acquasanta Terme," she concluded.
