Italian Olympic Committee
(CONI) chief Giovanni Malagò on Wednesday called for "courage"
to face new challenges at a ceremony with Italian President
Sergio Mattarella at the presidential Quirinale palace in Rome.
"We have the courage" to confront "challenges with
far-sightedness", hoping for "a future with five (Olympic)
rings", Malagò said referring to Rome's bid to host the 2024
Olympic, which was nixed by Mayor Virginia Raggi last week.
Such an aspiration, continued Malagò, "cannot be denied by
prejudice" nor hindered by "the fear of failure".
"Sport is a fantastic incentive" for development, the CONI
chief also said.
Raggi last Wednesday sank the bid citing the possibility of
property speculation and the likelihood of adding to Rome's huge
debt.
