Any ally, even the devil
himself, will do if it helps beat center-left Premier Matteo
Renzi's constitutional reform law at an upcoming referendum,
the House caucus whip for Silvio Berlusconi's center-right Forza
Italia (FI) party said Friday.
"The referendum is the battle for the life of our
democracy," said Renato Brunetta.
The premier's reform would usher in "a dictatorship, and
it's scary," Brunetta said.
"This is why we musn't be afraid to stand with
(anti-establishment 5-Star Movement Beppe) Grillo... I'd stand
with the devil himself if it helps me beat Renzi," he said.
A former Socialist, Brunetta joined the conservative FI in
1994 and has served as MEP and civil service minister during
several Berlusconi administrations.
