A former EU advisor to
ex-premier Enrico Letta has been named to the cabinet of
European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, EU sources
told ANSA on Tuesday. Stefano Grassi will be in charge of
justice and migration management, the sources said, adding that
the appointment is "an indicator of... the good relations
between the European Commission and Italy". He replaces the
previous Italian member of Juncker's cabinet, juridical expert
Carlo Zadra, who resigned in January over disagreements with
cabinet chief Martin Selmayr at a time of tension between
Brussels and Rome. Grassi has served at the European Commission
since 2004. Between 2011 and 2013, he served as advisor on
structural reforms and EU policies to former technocrat premier
Mario Monti, and as EU advisor to his successor Letta after
that.
