Egyptian President Abdel Fattah
el-Sisi on Monday said he "praised and thanked Italian Premier
(Matteo Renzi) for his positive statements" on the case of
Giulio Regeni, an Italian student tortured and murdered in
Cairo.
In an interview with three Egyptian newspapers, Al-Ahram,
Al-Akhbar and Al-Gomhoureya, he said "the Italians appreciate
our cooperation" on the case.
Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said there was "no laxness"
on the part of Egypt in the case, according to press agency
MENA.
Regeni, 28, went missing in Cairo on January 25, the
heavily policed fifth anniversary of the uprising that ousted
former strongman Hosni Mubarak, and his tortured and mutilated
body was found on February 3 in a ditch on the city's outskirts.
Egypt has denied speculation its security forces, who are
frequently accused of brutally repressing opposition, were
involved in the death of the Cambridge doctoral student.
