Tuscany Governor Enrico Rossi
said Friday he sees a lucky year ahead after a disgruntled
breeder threw animal excrement at him yesterday.
"They say manure brings luck, and since I received a lot of
it I see a truly fortunate year ahead," the governor said.
The breeder wanted officials to change regional regulations
on so-called butchery for self-consumption - or killing animals
on a farm rather than a slaughterhouse - raising the number of
lambs that can be slaughtered in this way from 40 to 200.
"EU rules don't allow it, and the only way to allow for
such a large number is to open a slaughterhouse," Rossi said.
Butchery for self-consumption is allowed in Italy for
chickens, goats, pigs, rabbits, and sheep.
The Democratic Party (PD) governor added he intends to turn
to prosecutors to pursue clandestine animal butchery.
"It is banned by law and there are no rituals, rites or
beliefs that can justify it," Rossi said.
