Interior Minister Angelino Alfano,
who leads the small New Center Right (NCD) party, said Thursday
the conditions are there to bring center-right moderates and
liberals together into a new political force.
"We must agree on a platform, a party name - because none
of the participating subjects can impose their own name - and
leadership which, as I said while I was still a member of
(Silvio Berlusconi's now-defunct People of Freedom) PdL party,
should be chosen through primaries," he said.
Alfano added the only thing he has in common with Matteo
Salvini, the leader of the rightwing anti-immigrant Northern
League party, is "the fact of not wanting to be together".
"(The League) is the extreme right...and has nothing to do
with moderates and liberals," the minister said.
