Premier Matteo Renzi on Tuesday
pledged to travel the troubled Salerno-to-Reggio Calabria
stretch of the A3 motorway on December 22 to prove that "no feat
is impossible" in Italy.
Renzi spoke as he inaugurated a new viaduct on the section
of the highway between Laino Borgo and Campotenese.
The much-delayed infrastructure project has come to
symbolise the problems of economic development and combatting
the mafia in southern Italy.
"When we started out, they laughed at us," Renzi said.
"On December 22 we will travel this infrastructure work
from Salerno to Reggio Calabria with (Transport and
Infrastructure Minister Graziano) Delrio.
"We'll go slowly. If they want, the (security) escort can
follow us".
