The head of Rome trash collection
agency AMA announced Tuesday he will step down August 4.
"I hope the city will be able to name new management," said
Daniele Fortini.
He also said the Malagrotta landfill, which was shut down
in 2013, might have to be reopened to deal with the trash
emergency in the capital.
Malagrotta owner Manlio Cerroni and a close aide were
convicted of forgery in 2014 and were reportedly indicted for
waste trafficking conspiracy the following year.
"Cerroni always said he has 250,000 cubic meters available,
which corresponds to 300,000 tonnes of trash," Fortini said.
The AMA chief's announcement that he will step down comes
the day after Rome's city cabinet member for the environment,
Paola Muraro of the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S),
barged in on him for a confrontation over the ongoing garbage
emergency in the nation's capital.
"We're not leaving until we get answers," Muraro told
Fortini yesterday.
"When you see garbage lying in the streets your job is to
collect it - you can't just leave it lying there," she said.
