Northern League leader Matteo Salvini
said Friday if the rightwing populist party got into government
it would take Italy out of the euro, without holding a
referendum. "We don't need a referendum because it would be a
massacre for the economy," he said. "I say that if the League
gets into government, we leave. If you take three months for a
referendum on the euro, there are people like Soros who massacre
you". The League is currently the top party on the centre right,
ahead of former premier Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia (FI)
party, its erstwhile ally. Salvini said that unless the
centre-right parties "team up now the League will run on its
own" in the next general election.
