The Italian Newspaper Publishers Federation (FIEG) and Google on Tuesday signed a strategic collaboration accord aimed at "promoting an innovative approach for Italian media in the digital era". The agreement envisages "the recognition of the importance of copyright and the valorisation of editorial content with the use, via revenue sharing, of the mobile distribution solution Google Play Newsstand and the video platform YouTube". Google will earmark 12 million euros over three years.
    The deal also envisages "recognising the importance of for publishers to have and use information of strategic value on users navigating on their digital products, through the advanced use of Google Analytics tools".
    The agreement "may also boost FIEG publishers and will focus on four strategic areas: mobile and video, copyright protection tools and training". Google's basic investment of 12 million euros will be used in collaboration with FIEG publishers, who will have access to tools and training on various strategic areas, and in particular: the distribution of content on mobile devices via Google Play Newsstand; the advanced use of Google Analytics tools; the development of a new video strategy via YouTube; joint action for the protection of online content, safeguarding publishers' copyright, via tools made available by Google; and the creation of a Digital Lab@Fieg, to transfer and share knowhow.
