More than 1,000 migrants have
died or have gone missing in the Mediterranean Sea in the past
week, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM)
estimated on Tuesday.
The U.N. agency said 62 deaths were confirmed and 971
people were missing, presumed dead, in nine shipwrecks in the
Mediterranean Sea between Libya and Italy since May 25.
The new estimate has been compiled based on reports from
survivors of the shipwrecks. A previous count by rescue workers
and Italian authorities estimated about 700 deaths in three
shipwrecks in three consecutive days. The IOM added some
additional incidents to establish the new total.
