Premier Matteo Renzi on Monday
warned against the "useless and harmful" exploitation of the
case of two Italian marines facing possible trial in India in
connection with the alleged murder of two Indian fishermen
during an anti-piracy mission in 2012 now that they are both
back in Italy.
Salvatore Girone and Massimiliano Latorre "have returned
thanks to patient and unpublicised action led by common sense,"
Renzi wrote in his weekly electronic newsletter.
"We will continue to work with common sense and
seriousness, without exploitation that is more harmful than it
is useless," he added.
"We are happy that (Republic Day celebrations on) June 2
will be the first in years in which none of our servicemen are
deprived of their freedom abroad. But we will not use June 2 for
any kind of exploitation," Renzi said, referring to the fact
that Girone was initially slated to attend the parade.
Girone arrived in Italy late Saturday afternoon after the
Indian Supreme Court rendered executive an order by the Hague
arbitration tribunal for him to be allowed to return home for
the duration of the arbitration procedure.
He had spent the best part of the previous four years in
New Delhi.
India allowed the other marine, Massimiliano Latorre, to
return to Italy after he had a stroke in 2014.
Both men were being held without formal charges in a case
that has strained relations between Italy and India.
