Silvio Berlusconi said Friday he
didn't pick Giorgia Meloni as his new Rome mayoral candidate
because she is a "professional politician" without the
"management skills" needed to run a city like Rome.
The Forza Italia leader on Thursday dropped civil
protection chief Guido Bertolaso and opted to back a 'civic'
candidate, businessman Alfio Marchini, worsening a rift in the
centre right.
The top centre-right party, the anti-immigrant and
anti-euro Northern League, is backing Meloni, leader of the
rightwing Brothers of Italy party.
