Premier Matteo Renzi said
Thursday that his government was ready to stiffen the laws
against corruption after a long series of graft scandals, some
of which have hit members of his Democratic Party (PD). "We are
ready (to pass tougher rules)," Renzi said in a #Matteorisponde
question-and-answer session via social media. "We are not
scared... We have already passed tough rules but we are always
ready to do more". He added that, while graft cases irked him,
it was not possible to write off the whole political class as
corrupt. "Every time a story of corruption comes out I get
indignant, I get angry," he said. "But we must all recognise
that there are distinctions between whole segments (of society)
and individuals and organised groups who make mistakes. You can
spout rubbish by saying that they are all the same, because the
crooks get off that way. Woe betide those who generalise because
they play the crooks' game".
