The European Union must defend
the Schengen Area by jointly managing the migrant emergency,
Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni said Wednesday. The
Union must "avert the concrete risk that unilateral decisions to
reinstate border controls will produce a domino effect...
rescinding the free circulation of people," he told the EU
foreign and political committees. Questioning Schengen could
have "irreversible" consequences and "enormous economic impact,"
Gentiloni said, adding the Dublin Regulation on countries of
first arrival must be revised because it is "difficult to apply
given the current flow" of asylum seekers fleeing wars and
Islamic terror in Africa and the Middle East.
