Leftwing MP Stefano Fassina
said Friday he would run for Rome mayor next June.
Fassina, a former finance minister in the Letta government,
left the ruling Democratic Party (PD) earlier this year and is
now a leader of a new leftwing party, Sinistra Italiana (Italian
Left, SI).
Elections will take place in Rome, Milan, Bologna, Naples,
Turin and Cagliari in a major test for Premier Matteo Renzi of
the PD.
A date has yet to be set but June 12 is favourite.
Rome was left rudderless after the recent PD-led ouster of
PD mayor Ignazio Marino after an expenses scandal.
