Rome's Fiumicino airport is in desperate need of investment to make up for two wasted decades, Transport Minister Graziano Delrio told the Senate on Tuesday.
The airport has been hit by a series of problems, including fires in the nearby area last week that caused massive disruption for passengers. "There has been paralysis in the airport's development for the last 20 years," Delrio said. "It is necessary accelerate investment for fill the structural deficit of an international hub that transports over 40 million people a year. We are paying the time that's been wasted".
