Italian President Sergio
Mattarella said Wednesday after the recent kidnapping of four
Italians in Libya that all countries are "in the firing line" of
Islamist fundamentalist terrorism.
"All are in the firing line - any country that fights for
tolerance, civilisation and respect for human lives," he told
reporters in the Maltese capital.
He had been asked if there was a fundamentalist offensive
against Italy.
Islamist fundamentalist terrorism "is an alarming
phenomenon, which must be confronted with firm but intelligent
responses," he said.
"Democracies...have a capacity to work together, which
gives the lie to fundamentalist intolerant propaganda".
