Italian President Sergio
Mattarrella said on Friday that there must be "no more
sacrifices" in the fight for democracy".
"It is no longer necessary to take up arms to defend
democracy as did that child, Ugo Forno, in order to obtain
freedom and democracy", the Italian president said at student
award ceremony 'From Resistance to Active Citizenship' promoted
by Italy's Education Ministry, in cooperation with the National
Partisans Association held at Rome's Quirinale Palace.
12-year-old Forno was killed in June 1944 while fighting
with friends and resistance partisans to prevent the destruction
of a Rome bridge by Nazi troops who wanted to stop the Allied
forces entering Rome.
Rome's Ugo Forno railway bridge was named in honor of him.
