Former Italian President Giorgio
Napolitano said Friday that Italy is now living in a period of
"greater security and stability" compared with the turmoil of
2013.
In an interview with RAI radio, Napolitano said there was
"no doubt, the situation today is different from 2013" when an
the inconclusive outcome of the February 2013 election result
led to a scramble to appoint a new premier and cabinet.
That has triggered efforts to reform the election laws.
Napolitano also said that government reforms have not been
rushed through parliament.
"It is not true that there has been haste" but instead
reforms have been presented and debated in parliament, said
Napolitano, who retired in January.
He added that he was pleased with anti-corruption measures
contained in a government decree now being transformed into a
law.
"We need to make effective rules and must not give in to
demagogic extremes," he said.
