New President Sergio Mattarella
said his first thoughts were devoted to "difficulties of the
citizens" after being elected on Saturday. "That alone is
enough," added the new head of State. Lower House Speaker Laura
Boldrini had proclaimed Mattarella Italy's new president
earlier, saying he won 665 votes from lawmakers from both houses
of parliament and regional representatives in the fourth
presidential ballot. The announcement was greeted by a standing
ovation, although 5-Star Movement (M5S) members didn't join in.
