The Senate labour committee on
Thursday approved the government's Jobs Act labour reform bill
after voting down all the amendments that had been filed. The
Jobs Act is slated to go to the Senate floor next Tuesday,
sources said. The center-left Matteo Renzi government wants the
bill converted into law by year's end so it can go into effect
January 1, but vast sectors of Italian labor and dissenters from
within the ruling Democratic Party continue objecting that the
measure will scale back rights, not create jobs.
