Premier Matteo Renzi said
Wednesday after meeting with President Giorgio Napolitano that
he will push key reforms through "between December and January".
"We will move very quickly in order to make Italy more
simple and more efficient, with fewer politicians, fewer
regional powers, and a streamlined electoral law," Renzi told
public broadcaster RAI TG1 evening news.
The premier went on to say his government will make it to
the end of its mandate in 2018 "as long as parliament keeps
working hard on reform, including at the weekend".
Many opposition parties - beginning with dissenters within
Silvio Berlusconi's center-right Forza Italia (FI) party - fear
Renzi's drive for electoral reform means he will call early
elections under a new system that would likely hand his
Democratic Party (PD) a relatively easy victory.
Berlusconi however has entered into a pact on electoral law
reform with Renzi in exchange for what he hopes will be a seat
at the table when the time comes to choose a successor to
Napolitano.
