Commissioner for Home Affairs on Friday said the EU maritime
patrol operation Triton would not be able to replace Italy's
Mare Nostrum (Our Sea) migrant search and rescue operation.
"With Mare Nostrum, Italy is doing exceptional work, saving
the lives of thousands and thousands of people. In any case, the
future of this operation remains an Italian decision. It is by
now clear that Triton can not replace Mare Nostrum and does not
intend to do so," said EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia
Malmstrom on the eve of launch of the new programme coordinated
by Italy and Frontex.
