Pierre Moscovici, who is set
to become the European Economic Affairs Commissioner, on
Thursday warned Italy that the EU's rules apply to everyone.
Moscovici was responding to journalists who asked him to comment
on the Italian government's announcement this week that it won't
balance the budget in structural terms until 2017. In the
original version of the government's economic blueprint, the
Economic and Financial Document (DEF), in April the government
had said the State budget would be balanced by 2016. "The rules
are the same for everyone, there are no differences between the
individual countries, they will all be treated in the same way,"
former French finance minister Moscovici said at his Commission
confirmation hearing.
