Premier Matteo Renzi does not want Silvio Berlusconi's opposition centre-right Forza Italia (FI) party to join his ruling government coalition, the deputy secretary of Renzi's centre-left Democratic Party (PD) said Thursday. "This hypothesis has clearly been excluded by Renzi," said Debora Serracchiani, who is also governor of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. Although the ex-premier Berlusconi's party is in the opposition, it is backing Renzi's bill for a new election law and his overhaul of Italy's slow, costly political machinery. Speculation that FI could enter the ruling majority was fueled by a meeting between Berlusconi and Renzi on Wednesday.
