The powerful militant
Islamic group ISIS represents a threat for European and Nato
countries, Italian Foreign Minister and EU foreign policy
chief-designate Federica Mogherini said Tuesday.
The crisis in Ukraine "must not obscure other crises" and
particularly the crisis in the Middle East, Mogherini warned
NATO leaders on the sidelines of a meeting with the foreign
affairs committee of the European parliament in Brussels.
"ISIS is a threat not just for Iraq and Syria but also for
European countries and for the other NATO countries, such as
Turkey," Mogherini said.
The minister ruled out political dialogue with the Islamist
militant group, calling instead for a united regional response
to the "challenge" it presents.
Mogherini, 41, is preparing to take up the position of
European Union high representative for foreign affairs in
November.
