Archaeology and wines will star at an event over the weekend in the ancient city of Paestum near the Campania city of Salerno.
Debates and round tables will kick off on Friday afternoon to continue Saturday with tastings of Italian wines competing for the 2016 edition of the best-wine award "Il Vino del Tuffatore" (Wine of the Diver).
A committee of experts will pick the best wine, which will be named "Vino del Tuffatore". "This year there is also the Diver, which has returned from the exhibit" Mito e Natura (Myth and Nature) held at Milan's Palazzo Reale from July last year through January 2016, said the director of the local archaeological area Gabriel Zuchtriegel, referring to the so-called Tomb of the Diver.
The archaeological monument was built in about 470 BC and found in a small necropolis south of the ancient Greek city of Paestum.
It is now part of the local museum's collection.
"The walls of the tomb show a Greek banquet", said the director, adding that he is going to speak at the event about the relationship between wine and Dionysus and the diving scene depicted on the tomb .
He will also talk about the Mediterranean diet as a "lifestyle" and culture.
Some 15 wine producers from the local Campania region, in particular the area of Salerno, as well as Sicily and Puglia in the south and Tuscany in central Italy will participate.
The event will kick off on Friday afternoon with a conference on "Wine of the diver: new research in Paestum and in Magna Grecia", by the director of the archaeological area Gabriel Zuchtriegel.
Afterwards, Professor Elisabetta Moro will talk about, "Ancel Keys and the syndrome of the diver" while Professor Marino Niola will focus on "Di-vine ferment".
Professor Giuseppe Festa, the director of a course on Wine Business at the University of Salerno, will talk about "The marketing of wine, territory and tourism".
Events on Saturday will start with a guided tour, followed by a round table with the presentation of the guide on wine producers in Campania 'Aziende Vitivinicole e Vinicole'.
The 2016 edition was made in cooperation with the Italian sommelier association from the Campania region.
In the afternoon, the local museum's Sala Santuari room will host an event on the Aglianicone vine and wine-cheese tastings, both organized by the local sommelier association.
The award ceremony "Il Vino del Tuffatore" will be held at 20:00.
A committee of experts will pick the wine considered to have the best oenological qualities and versatility in terms of its combinations with Mediterranean dishes and appeal for international markets.
