More than 300 Italian cake designers and sugar artists will attempt to build the world's largest cake during the 25th edition of Hobby Show Milano, an arts and crafts trade show to take place October 1-4 at Fiera Milano Rho convention center.
The event is being sponsored by the National Association of Cake Designers Italy (ANCDI) and Cake & Cake, an Italian sweet-decorating company.
The cake designers will attempt to build a cake shaped like Italy, complete with islands, mountain ranges and monuments, over the course of four days.
The cake is expected to weigh over one ton, and on the fourth day of the cake's construction, 12,000 portions will be distributed free to trade fair attendees.
Surelis Vazquez, president of ANCDI, said the world record attempt is also aimed at raising public awareness of cake decorating as a profession.
"What started years ago as a simple hobby has now become a real and true profession," Vazquez said.
"In fact, we've managed to get 'cake designer' put on the list of 'professions not organized into orders or colleges' with the Ministry of Economic Development".
The event will be witnessed by Guinness World Records judge Lorenzo Veltri, known for his participation in the "Show of Records" hosted by Italian TV personality Gerry Scotti.
