Italians will consume an estimated
50% more fish over Easter weekend compared to a normal weekend,
said Federcoopesca-Confcooperative on Wednesday.
The confederation of fishing cooperatives reported that 20%
more Italian-sourced fish will be sold compared to 2014, largely
thanks to a new European regulation - in force since December -
that requires labelling for the geographical source and fishing
technique used.
The confederation said prices will also drop by roughly
15%.
Fish is eaten in traditional observance of Good Friday,
making the Easter holiday the third most-popular moment for
seafood dinner in Italy, after Christmas Eve and the Ferragosto
summer holiday in August.
Seafood is expected to be eaten on Good Friday by about 65%
of the population in central-southern Italy versus 35% in the
north.
