The 26th winter edition of the Umbria Jazz festival is kicking off Friday in Orvieto with leading Italian and American jazz musicians and composers.
The Umbria Jazz Winter#26 runs through January 1.
This year's edition features concerts by Italy's leading jazz trumpet players Enrico Rava, Paolo Fresu, Fabrizio Bosso and Flavio Boltro as well as American stars such as avant-garde jazz pianist and composer Ethan Iverson and legendary pianist and composer Barry Harris, who is 89.
The festival's program pays homage to a wide range of genres, including Bud Powell's art and bebop, as well as the history of jazz, from its heart in New Orleans to Italy.
The event is also commemorating cult Italian song-writer and singer Fabrizio De André on the 20th anniversary of his death with concerts and readings.
Performances will be held at the Theater Mancinelli, the Museum Emilio Greco and Palazzo Capitano del Popolo, all buildings that are part of Orvieto's ancient city.
Other events will include wine and food tastings, at the Malandrino and San Francesco venues, while Tuscan street band Funk Off band will play across town with its mix of funky and traditional tunes.
All-night jam sessions will be performed by the resident band featuring sax players Piero Odorici and Daniele Scannapieco, pianist Andrea Pozza, bass player Aldo Zunino and drummer Antony Pinciotti.
The festival will end with two key traditional events: a gospel concert after New Year's mass at the Duomo with Tennessee's New Direction Gospel Choir; and three New Year's Eve concerts across town to welcome 2019.
