Posters, photography, design and modern art will be up for auction on November 6 in Turin, in a diverse catalogue that embraces different phases of 20th-century art.
The sale opens with a selection of important advertising posters from prestigious private collections, including three rare examples made for Rinascente, two signed by Marcello Dudovich, and one by Achille Luciano Mauzan who made the first advertisement for the historic Milanese brand in 1917. The selection includes an important collection of 47 posters created in 1929 for Mather&Company. Photos up for auction include three unpublished shots by Gustave Le Gray, dated 1867 and related to his trip to Nubia alongside the Pacha of Egypt, as well as some nude portraits by Roberto Baccarini from the 1930s. Among the portraits shot by great photographers is that of Frida Kahlo in a series of intense photos signed by Leo Matiz.
Picasso is portrayed by Robert Doisneau and Michel Sima, while Jerry Hall and Annie Leibovitz are portrayed by Andy Warhol. There is also a selection from the great masters of Italian photography: Mario Giacomelli, Franco Fontana, Nino Migliori and Gabriele Basilico. Shots of Marilyn Monroe will go on sale, including the top lot Crucifixion by Bert Stern, taken from The Last Sitting, the last photographic session of the iconic movie star before her tragic death. The section ends with a Lambda print by Massimo Listri and a selection of giant polaroids taken between 1996 and 2008 at the initiative of Gillo Pontecorvo for the international Venice Film Festival, which portray great stars of cinema and fashion.
A section dedicated to design presents, in addition to a selection of projects, drawings and objects signed by Gio Ponti, numerous lots designed by Carlo Scarpa, Franco Albini, the BBPR group, Sandro Cherchi, Ico Parisi and the creations for Stilnovo, Venini and Vistosi. Among the 190 lots are an important pair of lamps by Gino Sarfatti and the famous Arco lamp by Castiglioni. Pieces up for auction include a prestigious collection from Turin, among which are objects designed in the context of the Memphis and Meta Memphis movements, in particular a rare tapestry by Ettore Sottsass, of which only three copies were produced.
The catalogue closes with a section dedicated to modern art with drawings, graphic designs and paintings.
It starts with Futurism, with an important Fillia (Luigi Colombo) oil painting from 1931, and includes work by Gino Severini, Filippo De Pisis, Marino Marini, Xavier Bueno and Basilio Cascella , among others. The 20th century is represented by increasingly relevant names on the international market: James Ensor and George Grosz as well as Joan Miro, whose unpublished artwork will be up for auction. Also up for auction are masterworks by Mario Schifano, an Axiom by Vincenzo Agnetti from 1969 and a décollage by Mimmo Rotella.
VIEWING: from Friday 2 November to Tuesday 6 November (Sunday included) from 10 am to 6 pm. Turin - Sala Bolaffi, via Cavour 17.
