A hotel on Lake Garda in northern Italy has been named the most eco-friendly hotel in Europe by popular travel website Tripadvisor, it emerged on Wednesday. The Lefay Resort & Spa Lago di Garda in Gargnano came top of the national and European ranking and fourth at the global level. It has been described by one traveller as "totally immersed in the mountains, perfectly integrated into the surrounding landscape". The Dolomite region of Trentino Alto Adige boasted three of the top ten structures on the national level: Hotel Leitlhof - Dolomiten in San Candido (5th place), Wellness Hotel Lupo Bianco in Canazei (6th place) and Alp & Wellness Sport Hotel Panorama in Fai della Paganella (7th place).
The most sustainable hotel in the world was deemed to be the Tambo del Inka at the Luxury Collection Resort & Spa in Urubamba, Peru. This is followed by the Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort Aruba in Palm - Eagle Beach (Caribbean) and the Hotel du Vieux-Quebec in Quebec City (Canada).
Some 38% of Italians interviewed said they will make eco-friendly travel choices in 2017, while 15% said over the last year they had chosen a hotel due to its environmental impact. The attention towards environmental sustainability is also reflected in food and travel choices, with 88% of respondents saying they try to eat local and organic products when travelling and 31% using electronic boarding passes. In addition, 28% of those surveyed said when visiting new places they opt for eco-friendly tours such as ones using hybrid vehicles or bicycles or walking tours.
