Masterpieces by Paul Cezanne and Giorgio Morandi and photographs immortalising the extraordinary career of late Canadian racing driver Gilles Villeneuve are the subject of two major exhibitions opening in Italy at the weekend.
From April 22 to September 10 the Magnani Foundation in Mamiano di Traversetolo near Parma presents a small but extremely important exhibition inspired by Cezanne's 'Baigneurs' (1890-94), which is on display for the first time in Italy on loan from the Puskin Museum in Moscow. The painting is at the origin of a 'dialogue' between the works by Cezanne and Morandi in the Magnani collection, focusing on their common meditation on landscape and spatial analysis in still life. From April 21 to July 16 Spazio Oberdan in Milan hosts the exhibition 'Wow, Gilles!', retracing the sporting and personal adventure of a modern hero through over 170 photographs by renowned sports photojournalist Ercole Colombo. The exhibition also includes images from the Villeneuve Museum in Berthierville (Canada) and the 1981Ferrari 126CK Turbo engine.
Last but not least, an exhibition in Pisa's Palazzo dell'Opera running from April 22 to July 23 compares the local cathedral to St Peter's Basilica in Rome. The aim is to illustrate the strong link that emerged between the cities through the figure of Peter and the impact of the Vatican basilica on the cathedral in the Tuscan city. photo: Cezanne's 'Ferme en Normandie, Eté (Hattenville)' (1882)
