An Italian TV show on the Naples
Camorra mafia, 'Gomorra', has placed third in the New York Times
rankings of Best TV Shows in 2016.
It is the first time an Italian show has made the short list
of the best series from around the world.
The series, broadcast on Sky and produced by Cattleya, has
been sold for broadcast in 150 countries and received accolades
from both critics and the public.
The cast is entirely from the Campania region and the show is
based on the 2006 book by Roberto Saviano, which was made into
an award-winning 2008 film.
The show focuses on the exploits of the fictional Savastano
crime family and its rivals.
The series rivals such world giants as House of Cards and
Game of Thrones in terms of awards and viewers and is part of
what has been dubbed a "golden age" for Italian series after
such successful exports as 'Romanzo Criminale' and 1992.
The US debut on HBO of Paolo Sorrentino's The Young Pope is
eagerly awaited for next year.
