American writer Elizabeth
Strout underwent surgery at Naples' Cardarelli hospital on
Friday after suffering acute appendicitis during a visit to the
southern Italian city, sources said. Strout, who won the 2009
Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for the short-story collection Olive
Kitteridge, is recovering well in hospital after the successful
operation. She is in Naples to receive the Malaparte prize at a
ceremony scheduled to take place on Saturday.
