Italian director Lina Wertmuller
may be chosen to receive next year's Oscar for career
achievement, media said Monday.
Wertmuller, 88, the first woman director nominated for an
academy award for Seven Beauties and also known for The
Seduction of Mimi, Love and Anarchy and Swept Away, is one of
the favourites to be selected by the 54 members of a special
panel next Thursday.
She has already received the public backing of Sophia Loren,
Harvey Weinstein, Vanessa Redgrave, Helen Mirren and Taylor
Hackford.
James Ivory of The Remains of the Day and Howard's End fame
is reported to be among Wertmuller's rivals.
