The Venice police department
on Friday presented its security and anti-terrorism plan for the
city's annual Carnival celebration, which this year will include
five controlled entrances to the central St. Mark's Square.
Police will avoid a complete lockdown of the square,
allowing Carnival masks to be worn once the checkpoints are
passed.
Security checks will also take place at entrance points to
the city, Piazzale Roma and the central train station.
Law enforcement and emergency services will be
headquartered at Piazzetta dei Leoncini, just off St. Mark's
Square.
St. Mark's Basilica and the Ducal Palace will be cordoned
off and the space between the square and the buildings will be
used as emergency service lanes.
Two undercover task forces will be on duty as well, one
anti-crime and the other anti-terrorism.
