A horse was put down Monday after
an accident in a rider-less trial run Sunday used to pick rides
for the Siena Palio on July 2.
Perciclea, a seven-year-old mare, crashed into a horse in
front of her, breaking one of her front hooves.
Horses are often hurt in the famed twice-yearly bareback
ride around Siena's central Piazza del Campo, and they are
sometimes put down.
Animal rights activists have been campaigning for years to
have the Palio scrapped.
